A Guide to Interning Abroad in England

Prepare to Intern Abroad

Set goals

A great idea for any intern heading abroad is to make some goals! Here are a few to help you get started for your internship abroad in England.

  • Learn practical skills or techniques. Spend intentional time, like working alongside a mentor or signing up for a class covering the material, on it to refine, grow, or expand your skills.
  • Be aware and develop soft skills. A new environment can help jump-start one of those skills if you're in a rut.
  • Find a community outside of a professional setting. Find your place in England outside of work by signing up for a class, recreation organization, or group.

Understand the benefits

There are plenty of perks for interning in England, here are just a few highlights.

  • International market. England has, and continues to have, one of the greatest variety of career fields to work in. From arts and tourism to business and tech, the country has plenty of leads for all!
  • Great location. The island is a spectacular jumping-off point if you’re looking to explore the Republic of Ireland, Europe, and even Northern Europe.
  • Professionally regarded. An internship here can unlock a lot of future job opportunities and showcase some great qualities before you ever sit down for an interview.

Things to know

Wherever you head off to in England, know, any intern should be aware of the following.

  • Accommodations. The included living arrangements are typically in homestays with a local British family, apartments, or residence halls with other interns. You can also opt for a homestay and find out if afternoon tea lives up to all the hype.
  • Visa and paper requirements. Non-EU citizens seeking internships in England will need to acquire a Tier 5 visa. Consult GoAbroad’s Embassy Directory for the latest info on visas required for internships in England.
  • Cost and logistics. England’s cost of living is moderately expensive, especially in London. Consider roommates, budgeting, and finding a student or young traveler passes for public transportation and social outings to save money. The countryside towns are less expensive than London.
  • Cultural and social etiquette. England is a pretty casual country in terms of general social norms. Drinking is a part of the casual social fabric of England, a drink is fair game after work or something more formal.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can definitely find paid internship opportunities in England! However, these opportunities can be competitive and difficult to come by. Unpaid internships in England are still worth it though, for both career experience AND the simple joy of exploring a new country!

Finding a paid internship in England is a lot like finding any job. You should research companies that align with your career goals. Keep an eye on their careers page for paid opportunities for international students or send you resume and cover letter to their HR department.

If you want an internship in England, GoAbroad.com is a great place to start! You’ll be able to filter by specific field and duration. You can also research specific companies in England offering internships and apply to their opportunities directly.

For your internship in England, you’ll need a Temporary Worker-GAE visa (formerly known as Tier 5 visa). This visa allows international students to do short-term work up to one year.

I Had an Amazing Time With Beyond!

September 02, 2025by: Shannon Miller - United KingdomProgram: London Internships with Beyond Academy

I had such a great summer with the Beyond Academy programme! From the very first application to them, they were always there to guide me and give me advice. I got some great feedback and help with my CV and some really good interview practice. The internship I ended up doing was a marketing internship with a theatre in Islington. It was so much fun! I learned so many skills, and gained a lot of useful experience. Especially where PR is considered! I'm already in talks for a graduate job directly because of this experience! The London coordinators were such great people and super helpful! They were also a lot of fun at the Beyond events I attended (of which there were a lot, and often were covered as part of the programme)! Overall, I highly recommend using Beyond as it is such a stress-free way to complete an internship, experience the culture of another city, and really stands out on a resume!
