A Guide to Interning Abroad in Ireland
Prepare for Teach Abroad
Set Goals
When deciding to intern in Ireland it's important to set some goals. Goals can help maximize your time while staying intentional in your work day.
- Pick intentional skills or trades. Take the time to talk to mentors, volunteer for a project, or do anything else that will make you spend time with the chosen skills.
- Learn soft skills to develop. A new environment can help jump-start one of those skills if you're in a rut.
- Learn a new hobby. Figure out a hobby outside of work hours to connect with Ireland, and its locals, more deeply. It can be something that you already enjoy doing or something you'd like to pursue.
Understand the Benefits
Ireland is one of the friendliest countries and most relaxed! Although that’s a pretty great perk alone, here are a few more highlights.
- Luck of the Irish. Interning in Ireland carries all the benefits of professional experience, with the additional luck of landing a placement in one of Europe’s most fun and carefree countries. If you’re looking for job leads.
- Language. English is spoken everywhere and the people are renowned for their open, welcoming attitude, and (contrary to common misconception) the culture is anything but “Anglicized.”
- International success. Your success in an Irish internship will be judged on a global scale. International renown is given to the country’s independent companies and governmental agencies that continue to thrive.
Things to Know
To succeed in Italy, it helps to understand a few key aspects:
- Fees. If you are paying for an internship, it is likely an unpaid position without weekly wages. Those fees you pay for an internship are commonly used to arrange housing, transportation, and various other parts of the internship. Training should always be the responsibility of the intern’s employer or the placement provider.
- Accommodations. Is arranged through an internship agency or placement program, it is usually a shared apartment or house with other interns. For rural internships, interns may also have the option to stay with a host family. Independent housing is more expensive but can be an alternative for interns who prefer to have their own space.
- Visa requirements. You’ll need a visa and other requirements to enter the country—check with your program, embassy, or even airline for current details. A Short Term Employment visa will typically be arranged through your internship agency or employer in Ireland.
- Cultural and social etiquette. Ireland is a friendly country and most will welcome you, even tease you (a very good sign from the Irish). Drinking is part of the social structure and can be found in casual (a drink after work)l and more specific events (a wedding or funeral). The Republic of Ireland is not a part of the UK. There’s a long history that’s important to learn about if you are spending time there.
