How to Study Abroad in Fiji

Prepare to Study Abroad

Set goals

More than stunning beaches, studying abroad in Fiji is a chance to align your goals with an unforgettable experience.

  • Clarify your purpose. Knowing whether you want academic credit, volunteer hours, or research skills helps you choose the right program.
  • Plan your pace. Short-term, intensive experiences or laid-back semesters each offer different ways to grow academically and personally.
  • Factor in fieldwork. Many Fiji programs involve hands-on experience, so prep for learning outside the classroom.
  • Build flexibility into your schedule. Island time is real, so leave space for spontaneous community events, travel, and downtime.

Understand the benefits

Studying abroad in Fiji can spark new passions, skills, and a deep appreciation for global education and island life.

  • Real-world learning. Programs often include hands-on projects, from coral reef research to sustainable tourism initiatives.
  • Tight-knit community feel. Smaller programs mean deeper connections with classmates, locals, and mentors.
  • Nature as a classroom. From rainforests to reefs, Fiji's ecosystems provide an ever-changing environment for exploration.
  • Affordable island living. Fiji is more budget-friendly than many Western countries while offering unique educational perks.

Things to know

Island life in Fiji is full of surprises. Prepare for the practicalities so you can embrace every moment.

  • Visas are flexible. If you're staying under four months, you likely won’t need one. Longer programs usually require a student visa.
  • Housing varies. Expect to live in dorms, homestays, or shared apartments—each with its own vibe and learning perks, depending on how immersive you want to go.
  • Programs include perks. Tuition often covers housing, food, and excursions, which helps balance out travel costs.
  • Life moves more slowly. Island time is a real thing, so patience and flexibility are must-haves.

Best Summer Yet

I sailed with Sea|messter for 3 months from Fiji to Palau and Indonesia. I joined the boat with no sailing or scuba experience and ended up a rescue diver with multiple sailing certifications. All the staff and students were so friendly and the 22 strangers that I met on day one turned into a tight-knit family that was impossible to say goodbye to on day 80. The program is definitely challenging and will push you out of your comfort zone with long-passage and some rough nights but I now look back on those as some of my fondest memories. The boat transforms into a home with people who were put together by chance and now know some of the strangest stories about each other's lives. Nothing can ever beat the feeling of jumping off the boat to swim with manta rays just feet from our floating home or back-rolling off the dinghies to scuba dive across the equator or helming through 360-degree sunrises and sunsets in the middle of the ocean with some of your closest friends. This experience teaches you to be comfortable going outside your comfort zone and to always say yes, it may just turn into one of the best memories of your life.
