How to Study Abroad in New Zealand

Overview

Prepare to Study Abroad

Set goals

Studying abroad in New Zealand is a chance to shift how you live, learn, and connect, so be intentional about what you want to get out of it.

  • Focus on what you want to learn. This is your chance to study something different or dig deeper into your major.
  • Get comfortable being on your own. From catching the right bus to cooking dinner, the everyday stuff adds up.
  • Stay open to new people and ideas. You’ll meet people with different views and ways of life. Lean into it. That’s where the real growth happens.

Understand the benefits

A semester in New Zealand comes with a different pace, a fresh academic perspective, and the kind of scenery that makes every hike feel like a postcard.

  • Learn in one of the world’s most stunning classrooms. Whether you’re studying earth science near a geothermal hotspot or literature in a city café, the setting brings your studies to life.
  • Experience a different kind of university culture. Kiwi unis balance rigorous academics with a relaxed and inclusive vibe. There’s no stiff formality, just engaged learning and plenty of support.
  • See the world through a new lens. With strong Māori and Pacific influences and an outdoorsy way of life, you’ll leave with a broader and more grounded perspective.

Things to know

You don’t need to be an expert hiker or rugby fan to thrive in NZ, but here are a few practical things to keep in mind:

  • Semester timing - Southern Hemisphere academic calendars run from February to June (Semester 1) and July to November (Semester 2), so plan accordingly.
  • Weather swaps - Remember, seasons are reversed. Pack layers, especially if you're studying in cooler cities like Dunedin.
  • Grading differences - NZ uses a different academic scale and often puts more weight on final exams or papers. Don’t panic if your grades look unfamiliar. Your home university can help with conversions.
  • Housing options - Many students live in shared flats with locals or other internationals. These can range from studios to full houses and are usually near shops, cafés, and classes. Homestays are also an option and offer a fast track to local life.
  • Visas - If your program is under three months, you likely won’t need a visa. For anything longer, you’ll need a student visa. The process is online and pretty straightforward, but don’t leave it to the last minute. You’ll need a letter from your New Zealand university, proof of tuition and funding, and confirmation of your return travel plans.

New Zealand Study Abroad

My study abroad was great and I would definitely go back to New Zealand, just not to study abroad. The academics were horrible. It was also very very expensive and nobody would give me a job as an international student so I really struggled financially. The people are great though and so was the landscape. I was in Palmerston North my whole study abroad and it was very small, a big change from my big city life, but I would definitely come back to visit friends.
