How to Study Abroad in Chile

Prepare to Study Abroad

Set goals

Before studying abroad in Chile, take time to set clear goals. Knowing what you want to gain—academically, personally, and culturally—will help you choose the right program.

  • Focus your studies. Whether it’s environmental science, Latin American history, or Spanish immersion, pick courses that match your academic path.
  • Think beyond the classroom. Look for fieldwork, research, or service learning to deepen your experience.
  • Plan your cultural journey. Decide how you’ll engage with Chilean life—through travel, homestays, or local clubs and activities.

Understand the benefits

Studying abroad in Chile combines academic depth with unforgettable cultural experiences, all set against a backdrop of stunning natural beauty.

  • Academic variety. Chile offers top universities with strong programs in environmental science, political studies, Spanish, and more.
  • Cultural immersion. From city life in Santiago to small-town traditions, you’ll experience the full range of Chilean culture.
  • Outdoor exploration. Hike the Andes, visit Patagonia, or explore the Atacama Desert—Chile is a dream for nature lovers and adventurers alike.

Things to know

Chile is a fantastic place to study abroad, but a few key tips will help you settle in smoothly.

  • Language. Most programs are in Spanish, though some offer English options. Knowing basic Spanish will help you connect more deeply with locals.
  • Cost of living. Chile is moderately priced. Public transit and meals are affordable, but Santiago and tourist hubs can be more expensive.
  • Visas. U.S. students can stay up to 90 days on a tourist visa. For longer programs, you may need to apply for a student visa in advance.
  • Cultural norms. Chileans are warm but value formality. Punctuality and polite greetings are important in both academic and social settings.

EPIC & AWESOME

This program was incredible! Not only are you traveling to some of the most beautiful and unique ecosystems, you also get to experience them with a deeper understanding of the environmental and social issues at play. This course felt like a great balance of classroom academics, hands on experiences, and also the individual freedom to explore what interests you. It also is an excellent way to become more confident in your Spanish and your skills at adapting to new cultures, especially with the amazing experience of living with a host family. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves the outdoors, adventuring, and trying new things!
