A Guide to Study Abroad in Germany

Prepare for a Study Abroad Program in Germany

Set goals

Setting clear goals is crucial for maximizing your study abroad experience in Germany. Determine what you aim to achieve, be it academic growth, cultural immersion, or language proficiency. Here are some goals to consider:

  • Improve your German language skills while studying abroad.
  • Gain international academic experience.
  • Explore German culture and history.
  • Build a global network of friends and professionals.

Understand the benefits

Studying in Germany offers numerous benefits that extend beyond the classroom:

  • Academic Excellence. Germany is home to some of the world's top universities like LMU Munich, Heidelberg University, and Technical University of Munich.Offering diverse and high-quality programs with strong emphasis on research and development.
  • Cultural Immersion. Experience Germany's rich history, vibrant arts scene, and unique traditions with opportunities to travel around Europe.
  • Language Proficiency. Learn and improve your German language skills through immersion and formal study through university.
  • Career Opportunities. Gain a competitive edge in the global job market with international experience.
  • Affordable Education. Many German universities offer low or no tuition fees for international students.

Things to Know

  • Accommodation. Options include student dormitories, shared apartments, or homestays. University dorms are often the most affordable choice and are located near campus.
  • Budgeting. Plan for tuition, accommodation, food, and local transportation. Germany offers a relatively low cost of living compared to other Western European countries, though big cities can be pricier.
  • Visa Requirements. A student visa is required for non-EU citizens staying over 90 days. Gather necessary documents early, including proof of funds and a university acceptance letter.
  • Health & Safety. Health insurance is mandatory for students. Many programs offer it, but you can also opt for coverage from your home country.
  • Language Skills. While many programs are in English, learning basic German can enhance your daily interactions and cultural immersion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, you can study in Germany without knowing German! There are many English-language study abroad programs in Germany. That being said, one of the biggest perks of studying abroad in Germany is the potential to pick up new language skills.

Germany is a great place to study abroad for many reasons. High quality study abroad programs, historical sites, and the rest of Europe sitting at your doorstep all mean you should study abroad in Germany ASAP!

It’s simple enough to study abroad in Germany as an American or EU student. You’ll need to apply for a program, either through your university or study abroad provider. Once accepted, you’ll need to pay program fees, get insurance, and book your flight. American students will also need to apply for a Resident Permit after arriving in Germany.

It depends. You probably can’t study abroad in Germany for free if you’re studying through your university or a study abroad provider. However, if you’re an international student studying in Germany full time for your degree (as in, enrolling in a German university) then fees will be practically free compared to US tuition.

Study abroad costs in Germany are typical to anywhere else in the world. If you’re from Europe or the eastern United States, you can expect somewhat affordable flights. In all, you can expect a summer or semester in Germany to be comparable to your tuition at home, with additional costs for room and board, insurance, and your visa.

Only international students who have Student Visas are permitted to work in Germany, up to 20 hours per week.

American and EU study abroad students do not need a visa to study in Germany, but American students will need to apply for a residence permit when they arrive. This will allow you to study abroad in Germany for up to a year. Full time students will need a Student Visa.

Exploring Berlin

October 28, 2025by: Linus Isaacs - United StatesProgram: AIFS Abroad in Berlin, Germany (FUB): Semester
10

I chose AIFS Abroad because of the wide variety of activities and experiences offered within the program. Studying abroad in Berlin through AIFS was a very smooth and accessible process. The online application portal was easy to navigate, and the enrollment team was consistently responsive and supportive. My enrollment manager was always available by phone or email and replied quickly to any questions I had. They also had personal experience living in Berlin and familiarity with the program’s housing, which made our conversations especially helpful and tailored to my situation. During my time in Berlin, our on-site program manager was exceptionally welcoming, engaging, and enthusiastic. They organized local activities and group outings that introduced us to Berlin’s culture, history, and everyday life. Even after the program concluded, they followed up with a kind message encouraging me to apply for a post-AIFS internship opportunity — something I truly appreciated. My housing experience was excellent. I stayed in an AIFS-owned apartment in the heart of Charlottenburg, a vibrant and central neighborhood in Berlin. From my balcony on the 7th floor, I had an incredible view, and the location was surrounded by shops, restaurants, and cafes. AIFS also organized several group excursions in and around Berlin, providing deeper insight into the city’s rich history and cultural diversity. The included public transportation pass for the entire semester made exploring the city convenient and affordable. One of the most rewarding aspects of the program was the friendships I made. I met many of my closest friends during the first few days of AIFS activities, and we spent much of our time exploring Berlin and traveling together. We still keep in touch, and I’ve even had the chance to visit some of them at their home universities. It was inspiring to see how each of us experienced Berlin differently, blending our interests and passions to create a truly unique and memorable time abroad. Living in Berlin also allowed me to grow personally and academically. I joined local pickup soccer games, engaged in the city’s art and museum scene, improved my German language skills, and gained a deeper appreciation for international culture. I would highly recommend AIFS to anyone interested in stepping outside their comfort zone, immersing themselves in a new environment, and discovering more about themselves while exploring the world.
