A Guide to Studying Abroad in Rome

Prepare to Study Abroad

Set goals

Rome offers more than just stunning ruins and famous fountains—it’s a living classroom full of opportunities to grow. Set your goals early to make the most of your time in the Eternal City.

  • Embrace everyday culture. Learn Italian basics, enjoy local cuisine, and take part in community traditions.
  • Study through history. Let Rome’s monuments, museums, and ancient streets enhance your academic focus.
  • Travel with purpose. While based in Rome, take advantage of Italy’s rail system to explore the country and nearby European destinations.
  • Live like a local. Find balance between schoolwork and savoring the Roman lifestyle.

Understand the benefits

Studying abroad in Rome means more than just seeing the sights—you’ll experience the depth of Italian culture while earning credit toward your degree.

  • Rich academic setting. Rome offers world-class programs in art, history, politics, religion, and more—all set in a living museum.
  • Cultural connection. Dive into daily Italian life through food, language, and local traditions.
  • Global perspective. Rome’s international atmosphere fosters cross-cultural understanding and networking opportunities.
  • Built-in adventure. With Italy and Europe at your doorstep, weekend travel becomes part of the learning experience.

Things to know

Studying in Rome is exciting, but knowing a few key details can make your transition smoother:

  • Language. Italian is spoken everywhere, though many courses are in English—learning basics will go a long way.
  • Cost of living. Rome can be expensive—budget carefully for food, transportation, and travel.
  • Academic style. Fewer assignments, more weight on finals—stay on top of readings and lectures.
  • Transportation. The metro and buses are reliable, but much of the city is best explored on foot.
  • Safety. Rome is generally safe—just stay alert in crowded areas for pickpockets.

Roaming in Rome!

November 01, 2025by: Ally Hovdestad - United StatesProgram: AIFS Abroad in Rome, Italy: January

I chose to go abroad to Rome because it was my dream to experience the food, architecture, history, and culture up close. I chose to go abroad with AIFS because it offered the perfect timeline (J-term), it partnered with my home university, and it had the best combination of included housing, trips, food vouchers, and a super cool admin staff. I went to the Colosseum, Roman Forum, several wine tasting classes, and a cooking class through the program! I also went to Florence and Assisi. I chose to use the transportation package so I had an assigned travel buddy to go to the airport with me so I was never alone and I had transportation from the airport to the hotel where we met up with AIFS. My class on Italian Culture was super informative and I used the concepts I learned about Slow Food while abroad by finding high quality & fresh dining experiences (aka the BEST gelato ever). I had the benefit of going into the program with friends but I made great friends with my apartment-mates and the other girls from my school in my class. We'd gone to school together for years and somehow never crossed paths. I never would have imagined being confident enough to connect with strangers before studying abroad. I'm more sure of myself and I know that I can handle being in the real world by myself. I'd really recommend AIFS for anyone who wants to learn while abroad, but still focus on having the best, most authentic, and transformative experience ever.
