How to Study Language Abroad in Peru

Prepare for Language Programs in Peru

Set goals

Before you take off for Peru, setting clear goals will make your language learning experience more meaningful and successful.

  • Define your focus. Decide if you want to master Spanish fluency, gain conversational skills, or explore Quechua to connect with indigenous communities.
  • Choose the right environment. Big cities like Lima provide fast-paced immersion, while smaller towns such as Urubamba offer intimate cultural experiences.
  • Consider program structure. Language schools, university courses, and service-learning programs each bring unique learning styles and opportunities.
  • Plan your budget. Balance program fees, living expenses, and excursions while also researching scholarships or crowdfunding for extra support.

Understand the benefits

Studying a language in Peru offers far more than vocabulary and grammar. It’s an immersive, life-changing experience.

  • Authentic immersion. Practice Spanish daily with locals while also having the chance to explore Quechua.
  • Cultural connection. Experience Peru’s blend of indigenous and Spanish traditions through food, festivals, and art.
  • Affordable living. From fresh market produce to public transportation, the cost of living is student-friendly.
  • Adventure opportunities. Language programs often include cultural excursions, hikes in the Andes, or visits to historic sites.

Things to know

Before booking that one-way ticket, consider a few key things to keep in mind when joining a language program in Peru.

  • Scholarships are out there. Many programs offer aid, and sites like FundMyTravel make fundraising a breeze.
  • Cost of living. Peru is affordable, with meals, transport, and housing options well within student budgets.
  • Currency. Peru uses the Sol, with favorable exchange rates making everyday spending inexpensive.
  • Accommodation. Homestays are most popular for language immersion, though guesthouses and apartments are also available.

Great Option for Returning Learners

I had an awesome time with Maximo Nivel Online. I have previously taken an in-person immersion course with Maximo Nivel in Guatemala, and I am glad to say it was worthwhile to return virtually. While the online format can introduce occasional technical difficulties, the experience was generally positive and useful. My teacher, Paula, was an excellent conversationalist and good at identifying concepts I was struggling with and needed to review. All in all, I would recommend the course to anyone who is unable to travel for immersion.
