A Guide to Interning Abroad in Australia
Prepare for an Internship
Set goals
Make the most of your internship in Australia by creating some goals! Depending on your field they could look different than peers, but some great starting ones are:
- If you’re unsure of what field you’d like to pursue, take the time to think about your personal strengths academically and not to help narrow down your decision.
- Understand what you hope to find in peers and mentors, and work on those factors to become that person yourself.
- Figure out how you’d like to connect with the country and culture.
- Focus on a specific professional thing or things to work on—networking, a specific hard or soft skill.
Understand the benefits
Interning in Australia has plenty of perks! For anyone heading down under, you can expect the following:
- International diversity is present. Since Sydney is such a popular tourist and study abroad destination, you will be exposed to international diversity that will greatly enhance your chances for employment abroad.
- Fun attractions. There is no shortage of natural attractions to enjoy free of charge. Whether you’re cliff diving, relaxing on the beach, or team building there’s fun to be had.
- Language variation. With English as the main language of Australia, it’s generally easy to get around. Be prepared for some colloquial and regional accents and vocabulary, you’ll pick it up in no time.
Things to know
Wherever you volunteer in Germany there are a few basics everyone should know about before their trip.
- Cost of living - Australia is a relatively expensive destination due to its robust economy, so it's wise to create a budget and review what your program may cover.
- Cultural etiquette - Australians value personal space; when standing in lines or queues, keep some distance to ensure no one feels uncomfortable.
- Legal requirements - Many internships help with obtaining a visa. Be sure to get the necessary vaccinations and health insurance, often recommended by your internship provider.
- Accommodation - Interns typically stay in shared apartments, homestays, hotels, or dorm-style hostels. Housing is often included in the program fee and generally located on the outskirts of major cities, with a commute of about 30 minutes or less.

Frequently Asked Questions
It can be a bit easier than elsewhere to find paid internships in Australia, as Australia has somewhat strict laws surrounding unpaid work. However, unpaid internships are legal in Australia, as long as they fall under work experience arrangements (where the main focus of the placement is to learn new skills).
There are many internship providers in Australia, so once you know what type of internship you want to do and how long you want to intern for, it should be fairly easy to find viable options by searching online. You can also apply directly to companies that are based in Australia.
Once you apply to an internship program and get accepted, you’ll receive your internship placement in Australia based on your stated preferences. After that, your internship works pretty much like a normal job! Some internships also involve taking classes or participating in field work.
