A Guide to Internships Abroad in Thailand

Prepare for an Internship

Set goals

As you set foot in Thailand, your goals will give you a sense of direction and accomplishment, so make sure to set them as you kick off your internship. Here are a few customizable goals to get you started:

  • Interning in Thailand is a great chance to connect with mentors, peers, and professionals. Set a goal to establish relationships that could lead to future collaborations or job opportunities.
  • Make it a point to live and practice Thai culture, customs, and language. Attend festivals, learn basic phrases, and practice cultural sensitivity to deepen your connection with the country and its people.
  • Challenge yourself to adapt to life in a new country. Thailand offers opportunities for personal growth, enhancing your adaptability, independence, and confidence.

Understand the benefits

What's in Thailand that will leave you in awe and make your internship even better? From the warm welcome of the locals to the delicious food, there’s so much to love about interning in this beautiful country.

  • A warm welcome.Thailand’s friendly locals and top-notch hospitality will greet you the moment you arrive, earning its title as the Land of Smiles.
  • Amazing food. Thai cuisine is bursting with flavor, offering a mix of spice and freshness. You can enjoy world-renowned dishes like pad thai and green curry at incredibly affordable prices, ensuring great meals every day.
  • Affordable living. With affordable essentials like food and housing, Thailand lets you stretch your budget further for fun and experiences.

Things to know

Before heading to Thailand for your internship, there are a few things to keep in mind to help you better prepare and settle into life abroad:

  • Pay and expenses - While Thailand's affordable cost of living means you can live comfortably on a budget, most internships only offer a small salary or stipend to cover essentials like food and transportation.
  • Accommodations - For a few months' stay, a homestay provides an immersive cultural experience, while hostels are suitable for short visits, and apartments offer stability for internships lasting six months or more.
  • Visas for Thailand - An education visa is necessary for internships in Thailand, requiring a valid passport, proof of funds, a completed visa application, and passport-sized photos. It’s valid for three months and extendable up to a year.
  • Language barrier - In business and tourism, English often suffices, but learning basic Thai phrases shows respect and helps foster deeper connections with locals, enhancing your overall cultural experience.

Work culture - Clarify workplace expectations early by asking questions, observe and learn from colleagues to adapt quickly, and explore life outside of work to find your balance in the new environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Decide what type of internship you’re interested in and how long you want to intern for, and start searching online. (GoAbroad is a good place to start!) You can also research companies that are based in Thailand and apply to internship opportunities directly.

It’s possible to find paid internship opportunities in Thailand, although they’re much less common than unpaid internships. Unpaid internships are still worth it though, as you’ll get valuable work experience, expand your network, and make memories!

Thailand: Living and Working Abroad

October 16, 2025by: K T - CanadaProgram: Internship in Thailand - Asia Internship Program

My experience with the Asia Internship Program had many high points, particularly through the company I was matched with. I was placed in a company that aligned with my interests and allowed me to grow through hands-on work in a supportive and communicative team. The location was convenient, and I felt genuinely cared for by my workplace during my time there. AIP provided some strong support, specifically through their on-the-ground community team, who was responsive and helpful during my stay. Their platform was easy to navigate, and after some discussion they found comfortable housing, which made the transition smoother. The availability of 24/7 support provided some peace of mind during my time abroad. That said, for me, a challenge was pre-departure communication. At times, I felt I had to chase information just to stay on track, and it wasn’t always clear what stage I was in or what was expected of me. Having a lack of information that ensured security created unnecessary stress before the internship began. During the internship, I would have appreciated more consistent community engagement, such as biweekly events or cultural outings to help interns connect with each other and their host country. While events were occasionally mentioned, during my experience, there weren’t consistent opportunities organized for interns to connect, and much of the social interaction had to be self-organized. To AIP’s credit, I did feel they genuinely cared about my experience and responded when feedback was given. With clearer communication and more structured community-building, AIP could greatly enhance an already valuable program.
