A Guide to Taking a Gap Year in Japan

Prepare for Your Gap Year

Set goals

Think about what you really want to get out of your gap year in Japan. To spark some inspiration, here are a few ideas:

  • Pick up Japanese. Whether it’s learning enough to order ramen like a local or being able to read street signs and menus, improving your language skills will make daily life much smoother while you’re there.
  • Explore your passions. Japan has so many opportunities for different fields you’re interested in. If you’re into trying traditional arts like calligraphy or testing the waters with teaching or internships, this is your chance to explore what you’re curious about.
  • Try new things. From meeting new people to figuring out your way in a new city, stepping out of your comfort zone is where you’ll grow the most—and create memories to last a lifetime.

Understand the benefits

Taking a step back and trying to see things from a new perspective is already a win. But making Japan the setting brings so much more to the table:

  • Discover a different way of life. From vending machines serving hot meals to understanding why bowing is second nature, living in Japan makes you rethink and appreciate the little things in everyday life.
  • Explore Japan’s natural beauty and urban energy. One moment you’re hiking through a serene bamboo forest or soaking in a hot spring, and the next, you’re surrounded by the bright lights and buzz of Tokyo. Japan somehow makes both worlds feel effortlessly connected.
  • Get hands-on professional experience. Whether you’re teaching English or exploring an internship, these experiences help you build real-world skills while figuring out what truly excites you about your future. Plus, it’s a resume booster with a great story attached!

Things to Know

Before you take off, here are a few things to keep in mind for your time in Japan:

  • Cost of living - Japan isn’t the cheapest place, especially in cities like Tokyo. Make a budget ahead of time so you can enjoy all the experiences without worrying about your expenses.
  • Weather - Summers are hot and humid, while winters in the north can be freezing and snowy. Be sure to pack clothes that match the season you’ll be there.
  • Politeness matters - Respect is a huge part of Japanese culture. Learning simple things like how to bow or give a gift properly can help you fit right in.
  • Basic Japanese helps - Knowing a few phrases like “hello,” “thank you,” or “where’s the station?” will make your interactions smoother and show locals that you’re making an effort.

I grew so much and had the time of my life doing so.

The voyager program was the best possible program that I could’ve taken. Between the people I was surrounded with, the staff, and the cultures I was immersed in, I was able to learn and connect. I have grown so much and I will be so grateful to EF for that. Throughout the journey, I mostly felt supported, especially with having food allergies, however, in Japan, the first tour guide, and myself did not always see eye to eye, therefore I did not feel supported. However, once this situation was remedied, we were given a lovely tour director named Mari. She was kind and cordial with the group and very knowledgeable about the area which made our experience all the more wonderful we learned so much and I am so grateful to EF for having this program. Shout out to my blue group.
