DAKTARI is a registered nonprofit company based in South Africa, close to the Kruger National Park. DAKTARI is also a bush school that operates a wildlife orphanage, where the objective is to inspire and educate local underprivileged children to care for their environment through wildlife conservation. Every Monday we welcome a new group of eight underprivileged South African children for a week and give them the opportunity to discover, learn, and become passionate about wildlife and environmental conservation – their heritage. We also supplement their academic curriculum in English, Mathematics, Geography, life skills, and social issues. Our aim is to enable the youth of today to secure good employment in nature reserves in the future and improve their quality of life.

I had a great and valuable experience
November 07, 2025by: Havva Karadag - GermanyProgram: Volunteer with Children & Animals at DAKTARIAs I mentioned in my first week review, my experience at DAKTARI started off very positive. I appreciate the great atmosphere, the teamwork, and the chance to work closely with both the children and the animals
If you’re a lover of animals, this is for you!
November 07, 2025by: McKeely Sullivan - AustraliaProgram: Volunteer with Children & Animals at DAKTARIYou get the chance to interact and care for African wildlife, a once in a lifetime opportunity! The people here are all very friendly and welcoming. My 2 weeks at Daktari felt like I had known the staff for a lifetime. You get to know each member intimately through excursions and free time activities. Very hard to say goodbye.
The Best Experience
October 08, 2025by: Abby Stevenson - South AfricaProgram: Volunteer with Children & Animals at DAKTARII had the most amazing time at Daktari. The staff and volunteers I met are so so special and will hopefully be my friends for life! The animals are so well looked after and the way we show the children how to look after animals is so vital for their lives. The impact that we can make on the local children is astonishing and all of the children I had the privilege of teaching always loved their week at Daktari - I hope I have been able to help the mission of educating South Africa’s next generation!

I love travelling, volunteering on wildlife. and educational programs, and this combined all three into one. Living in a local community or working with local people is the best way to travel and experience a destination, if you ask me.

I visited several countries in the past as a tourist; these were nice experiences but somehow not satisfying anymore. I really wanted to help people, not only by spending money in their country. Therefore, I chose to use my main holiday to volunteer abroad.
