A Guide to Summer Camps Abroad

Prepare for Summer Camp

Understand the benefits

We don’t think there needs to be much of an explanation for the benefits of participating in a summer camp program abroad that you love, but here are some basics that everyone will walk away with!

  • Unique bonds and friendships. Every step of the way you’ll be making new connections, and those that are alongside you in the program are the ones you can share it with.
  • New experiences. Going abroad, you can always expect to encounter at least one new experience but the ones found in summer camp programs are special. They are designed with campers like you in mind and offer some really exceptional happenings.
  • Personal growth. With all the talk of new experiences, there’s no way that you won’t personally grow during your time abroad. Some of it may be intimidating but trusting yourself enough to partake will change your life for the better.

Things to know

Although summer camp is mostly fun and games, there are some major things to know for anyone planning on participating in a program. Below are the basics to keep in mind as you plan for your trip.

  • Visa and paper requirements - Most programs require a visa, so check with embassies, airlines, and the program itself for the latest requirements and documentation you’ll need to have a smooth experience.
  • Language skills - Be aware of any language requirements for your program. Learning some basic phrases can ease introductions and help you navigate, and you may even find communities where your language is spoken.
  • Cost and logistics - Plan for the cost of living, including groceries, transportation, and other daily expenses, as not all programs cover these costs. Pack light—it’ll make travel and settling in easier.
  • Health and safety - Follow all health and safety guidelines of your destination, get recommended vaccinations, and stay conscious of local regulations and smart daily habits to stay safe.
  • Cultural and social etiquette - Learn about common greetings, social expectations, and potential faux pas; these courtesies can vary widely and help you integrate smoothly.

Frequently Asked Questions

A traditional summer camp for young campers typically involves fun activities in the morning and stories in front of a campfire at night. Nowadays, a summer camp can have specialized activities or themes such as language learning, computer programming, or performing arts. It could also be educational or academic and open to participants across different age groups.

The average cost per person per day of a day camp is $178, while for sleep-away camp is $448. On the other hand, a specialty camp can go from $260 up to $2,900 per week depending on the theme or activities. Fees typically include the use of facilities and amenities, meals and snacks, transport service, activities, and housing.

The activities involved in a summer camp depend on the organization or provider and the main theme. Generally, participants enjoy outdoor sports and activities, arts and crafts, music, and life skills. Perhaps, the most common activity is gathering around a campfire at night.

Always remember to pack light when preparing for camp and pack from the top down. The list should include headgear, clothing, footwear (broken in and stretched to the shape of the feet), gear, bed, toiletries, and bath. All items should have labels.

Warriors academy taught me to face my fears, and be brave. I learned how to push past what I thought to be my limits. I met some wonderful people from all over the world, and was supported by the amazing facilitators here at Warriors. If you are looking for a place to help you grow and work on mastering the inner parts of yourself, I highly suggest you take the opportunity to come on this wild adventure!
